How to host
Sanur Social runs on people who make others feel welcome. You don’t need to be a rules expert. A good host just makes sure nobody sits alone. Here’s how to host anything from a Saturday game day to a sunrise walk.
Small · 2–8 people
A weeknight card game at a warung, a coffee meetup, a beach walk or a quiet strategy game for 3–4 people. One host, very little setup.
Medium · 8–20 people
A cafe games afternoon or an evening event. Reserve a few tables and bring a mix of quick and longer games.
Large · 20+ people
The Saturday game day, 12–4 pm, or a tournament. Name tags, a welcome table and a helper to get newcomers into games.
Places we recommend
Our favourite spots around Sanur, and the group sizes each one suits best. Message the venue before you go, or ask us and we’ll help reserve.
We’ll handle the back end. For Saturday game days we normally pick and reserve the cafe, put it on the schedule and announce it in WhatsApp on Wednesday. You turn up and host. For your own events, tell us the plan and we’ll add it to the schedule and share it in the group.
Before the day
- Agree the details with us in WhatsApp: date, time, place and roughly how many people. We’ll add it to the schedule.
- Check the place. Big enough tables, shade or aircon, power for fans, decent food and drinks, and staff who are happy for a group to stay a few hours.
- Check the reservation. For Saturdays we’ll tell you whether it’s booked and who the contact is. For your own events, message the venue a couple of days before.
- Plan the games. Bring a mix: a couple of quick party games for big groups, a card game for people waiting on food, and one longer game for people who want to settle in. See the games library.
On the day
- Arrive 15–20 minutes early to set up a welcome spot near the entrance.
- Name tags for everyone. First name in big letters.
- Greet every new person. Ask what they like (quick and chatty or long and thinky?) and invite them to a table with a seat free.
- Start one big group game early, like Concept, Just One or Wavelength. It mixes people before they split into smaller tables.
- Teach or find a teacher. If you don’t know a game, ask who can teach it. Many games list teachers in the library.
Not a board game person?
Host something else social!
- A sunrise walk along the Sanur beach path, finishing with coffee.
- A moonrise dinner.
- A coffee tasting.
- A card-games evening (Flip 7, Phase 10, Coup).
- A bridge practice session for people to learn.
- A themed day for one big game, like a Brass: Birmingham or Dune: Imperium afternoon.
After
- Thank the venue and leave the tables tidy.
- Tell us how the place was. Food, space, noise, aircon, how the staff felt about us. We keep notes so we know where to go back to.
- Share a photo in the group.
